What Is a Business Valuation

and How Do You Calculate It?

A business valuation is the process of determining the economic value of a business or company. It's essentially an objective assessment of what a business is worth. This can be done for a variety of reasons, including sale, acquisition, financing, business planning, taxation, and litigation. We offer two valuation reports: (1) Opinion of Value and (2) Full Business Appraisal.

Opinion of Value

An Opinion of Value report is for internal planning purposes only and is more cost-effective than a Full Business Appraisal. In most cases, the valuation will be similar to what is calculated in a Full Business Appraisal. However, it will not include all the supporting details required by the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and the IRS. In some cases, the missing detail in the Opinion of Value report could cause the value calculation to differ from what is calculated in a Full Business Appraisal Report.

Full Business Appraisal

If you need a Business Appraisal for financing, taxation or litigation purposes, you will need a USPAP-compliant report. USPAP compliance is crucial for ensuring that appraisals are conducted with competence, objectivity, and integrity. It helps to protect clients and other users of the appraisal by providing a framework for ethical and professional behavior.

If you're seeking a business valuation for purposes other than internal planning, it's important to ensure that the appraiser you choose is USPAP compliant. This will help to ensure that the valuation is conducted ethically and professionally and that the report meets the required standards.
